Details Matter
As a consumer, it is important to understand the importance of focusing on the small things during a build. Small details like grain matching, crack stabilizing, wood movement, and finishing process have a huge impact on the final look and performance of a piece. Boards that are not matched for grain pattern, color, or figure could lead to a less than visually pleasing appearance. While not detrimental to the structural performance of a piece it can be a let down as a consumer. Since we do use woods that can have cracks, knots, ingrown tree bark and other defects it is important to properly stabilize those areas to ensure a long lasting stable piece. This includes removing all loose debris, saw dust, and bark. Properly prepping the locations to ensure a strong bond with either wood patches, bow-ties, and epoxy will ensure a long lasting repair. If steps are skipped a defect can lead to structural failure or surface cracks. Since wood still moves with the changes in humidity it is extremely important to ensure that those movements are taken into account during a build. Failing to ensure proper allowance for movement leads to large cracks, separation of joints, failed support, and possible total loss of a piece. When applying finish every manufacturer has specified steps for ensuring proper adherence of their product and a long lasting finish. When steps are skipped or the process is rushed it leads to orange peel, pitting, delamination, early failure of the finish, or a soft gummy surface. All of these would require a complete refinishing of a piece and frustration on your part as a consumer.

It is important to note that there are many other details that require attention by any builder. When a builder overlooks one detail there is a high likely hood that additional details were skipped during a build leaving you with an inferior product for what you paid. These missed details can either be intentional or unintentional by a builder but regardless it is a lack of respect for the craft of furniture making and more importantly a lack of respect for you, the consumer. For us, every piece we make has a part of us in it and requires the utmost attention to detail to ensure that our product matches the quality that you are expecting.

Our Process
Our process always starts with the first interaction with a client. We get an understanding of what a client is looking for, dimensions, wood species, and where they are located. If it is a brand new design we will create 3D mock ups and go through as many iterations as required before getting the sign off from the client. After sign off or if it is a design of ours, we begin hand selecting material to match what the customer is looking for. We then begin to process the material to rough dimensions and allow it to acclimate to our shop for several days after processing. This allows the wood to move as fresher wood is exposed to the air and begins to dry. We will then begin to continue breaking the material down and begin glue up of components. For table tops, we do sub assemblies and plane them until we have two halves that can be run through the planer and glued together afterwards. For larger components they are run through a drum or wide belt sander to uniformly flatten. Smaller components will be either hand shaped or sanded. Once every component is ready the final piece will begin to be assembled. After assembly we then begin the finishing process and prefer to let a piece sit for several days after finishing to see if any issues or defects appear. If any issues arise we can address them at that point and correct before delivery.

During the entire process we also take photos and provide updates to the client. This allows you to see the progress and ask any questions that you may have based on what you see. If a client is close enough we encourage them to stop in during a build to see the piece in person and can then walk them through the process or answer any questions in person that they have that they may not have had based on pictures alone.
